Our cities have a significant impact on our minds. Our behaviour is thoroughly guided by our environment .We as a team of Urban designers and planners are researching on city design and its impact on our mental wellbeing .Our team looks into the details of the design of our environment such as outdoor neighbourhood design features ,public spaces, streets, semi-public spaces , urban greens ,facades etc. Each element of our surrounding space evokes different emotions. We explore the emerging issues of mental wellbeing in the city and come up with a design solution to the problems existing.
- Placemaking-Different placemaking projects could be incorporated at a city level or a neighborhood level with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and mental well-being.
-
Redevelopment and retrofitting of urban spaces-In a well developed city where space is a constraint, redevelopment and retrofitting of urban spaces could be done focussing on community engagement, social connectedness and attracting people from a large circle.
-
Local Area Planning –Local area planning involves community members working together with the City to identify specific issues affecting their community and produce a plan that provides solutions to meet the specific needs of their local area and support its unique character to maintain people’s health, happiness, and mental well-being.
-
Street Design for psychological Well Being –Streets are an inseparable part of our daily lives. Streets offer different environments for different purposes such as shopping, going to work, meeting people, food and many more. The design of the street gives it a certain character which also changes the usage pattern of the street. Our behaviour on the street is a response to the environment around for example if you have a tall blank wall along the street you are walking your speed will vary on crossing that street in comparison to the street with shop fronts. Design on the street does not just impact pedestrians but people who are driving as well. Street environment can affect negatively with stress and anxiety or can help in the psychological wellbeing of the people.
-
Urban design Guidelines-Urban design is not just limited to designing urban spaces but gives a policy based solution to various urban issues. Urban design guidelines focus on how it can impact people’s need ,behaviour as its long term goals considering all the future possibilities of transformation in our cities.
-
Urban Design Audit –Urban design audit here refers to reviewing of the existing urban design proposals and coming out with suggestive framework to inculcate happiness, psychological wellbeing and sociability among the people in the intervention.
-
Assessment and Recommendations- Assessment at both neighborhood level to city level could be done based upon the indicators identified for “happiness by design” and recommendations or Proposals could be structured for the same.
-
Renovation & Restoration– sometimes urban areas have gone through tragic events which can create a negative effect on people moving around that. It can be a reminder to depressive situations thus though restoring or renovating we can bring a significant change in affected areas .
-
Retrofitting in Urban Areas- Retrofitting aims to bring a solution through on site design recommendations for the affected areas which enhances livability in cities.
